VIU Nanaimo Campus Looking West

Clean Desk and Secure Workspace Practices

A reminder to all employees of the importance of following clean desk and secure workspace practices to help protect university property, sensitive information and personal items. Maintaining a secure workspace includes the following best practices:

 Clean desk and end-of-day security

  • Ensure all private VIU documents, keys and valuables are secured in locked cabinets or drawers.
  • Log off or lock and secure your workstation whenever it is unattended.
  • Please ensure your office door is locked at the end of the day.

 Secure workspaces and valuable items

  • Keep offices, classrooms, labs and storage areas locked when not in use.
  • Secure sensitive equipment, documents and personal belongings in appropriate storage areas.

Stay aware and report suspicious activity

  • If you observe unfamiliar individuals, unusual behaviour or signs of tampering, make note of the details and contact Campus Security promptly.

 Access control

  • Do not prop open exterior doors or permit tailgating into secured spaces.
  • Keep your access card and keys secure and report any lost items immediately.

Your cooperation plays an important role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. Thank you for your continued support.
